Mental Health Awareness Week

Postpartumwtf.com was born out of a haze of postpartum depression, therapy, medication, self-reflection, recovery, and eventually hope. It seems appropriate to get this started during Mental Health Awareness week, because I don’t think you can talk about the postpartum ride without talking about mental health.

There have been so many parts of becoming a parent that have made me wonder “Why didn’t anyone tell me about this?”

This is for all the moms (and dads and parents) who wondered “What the fuck have I done?” when your baby was awake at 4 am and you despaired you’d never sleep for 7 straight hours ever again.

This is for all the parents whose expectations were entire worlds away from their realities.

This is for all the parents who thought “WHAT THE FUCK?” or “WHERE DID THIS SCREAMING POTATO COME FROM?”

This is for all the parents who came to their breaking points and felt so, so alone.

Of course we love our children as whole humans, the mess and the beauty, but we find it harder to allow ourselves to be whole humans. I want to share the mess and the hard parts, but also share what helped me get through the hard parts. There’s so much joy and beauty in parenting, and without that I’d be lost.

I want to share my story, which is the story of countless other parents too. No two stories are exactly alike, but many of them are similar. I’m ready to be vulnerable on the internet and let you see the cracks in the walls. The cracks are how the light gets in.

Please feel free to say hello in the comments. I look forward to chatting with you.
